There were at least 19 Black scientists and technicians who worked on the Manhattan Project. In the labs, there were at least 19 Black scientists and technicians among the 400 or so scientists employed by the project. The project was unique for bringing together "colored and white, Christian and Jew" for a common cause, Arthur Compton, the Manhattan Project director in Chicago, said. The Manhattan Project did create opportunities for Black Americans' advancements, but many Black workers grappled with Jim Crow segregation. Many Black scientists involved in the Manhattan Project went on to build careers that advanced technology and expanded opportunities for other Black scientists.

New York CNN —US Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen has been calling CEOs and business leaders to discuss the consequences of brinkmanship around the debt ceiling, according to a source familiar with the matter. In a report published last week, White House economists said that a protracted default would wipe out more than 8 million jobs and cut the value of the stock market in half. The report estimated the impact under three scenarios: brinksmanship, a short default and a protracted default. A White House spokesperson said the protracted default scenario envisions a three-month long impasse. The White House has said it will not negotiate over the debt ceiling.

Kevin McCarthy is meeting with Biden on Tuesday to discuss a debt ceiling solution. Ahead of the meeting, McCarthy told NBC he will not accept a short-term debt ceiling increase. The US could default on its debt as early as June 1, and Congress has yet to agree on a solution. Biden vowed to veto that legislation and has remained adamant that raising the debt ceiling should be a bipartisan and clean increase, without any spending cuts attached, and he has left the door open for budget negotiations — separate from a debt ceiling deal. But McCarthy told NBC News on Tuesday that he is unwilling to accept even a short-term debt ceiling increase ahead of budget negotiations.

Jeffries, the incoming House Democratic leader, said Republicans have not laid out an economic plan. During his interview with CNN, Jeffries was relatively mum on his feelings about Kevin McCarthy. "It's because there's a real risk that the incoming Republican majority is being hijacked by the extremists who have grown in ranks," he added.
